DETROIT — The revamped 2011 Chrysler 300 has been spotted for the first time without camouflage. The 300′s design is intended to capture the presence and dignity of more upscale and expensive sedans. The interior has been redesigned to have the look and feel of some luxury sedans. The front-end styling incorporates Chrysler’s new corporate grille and logo, flanked by projector-beam headlights and LED lighting strips.

Chrysler Group is investing $600 million in its Belvidere, Ill., assembly plant, where it is expected to build a new generation of Fiat-based vehicles. The investment includes construction of a new 638,000-square-foot body shop and the installation of new machinery, tooling and material handling equipment, Chrysler said today.

The Belvidere plant currently builds the Dodge Caliber, and Jeep Compass and Patriot crossovers.

The new Dodge sedan, which will replace the Caliber, will be the first of a series of vehicles based on a Fiat-derived architecture called Compact Wide, according to people familiar with the plans. A Chrysler compact sedan is also planned in 2013, according to Chrysler’s five-year product plan, unveiled last November. Speaking to reporters in Turin, Italy, last month, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said there will be a 40 mpg version of the new Dodge compact sedan.

Manufacturing a Chrysler Group model in the United States that delivers 40 mpg is the second of three milestones Fiat must reach to increase its stake in Chrysler to 35 percent in three increments.

Chrysler will reach the first of those three milestones when it begins production of Fiat’s 1.4-liter FIRE MultiAir engine in Dundee, Mich., between the end of this year and the first quarter of 2011, Marchionne said. That engine will first be used in the Fiat 500 minicar, which will go on sale in January. That car, also expected to exceed 40 mpg, will be made in Toluca, Mexico.

The Belvidere assembly plant currently employs 2,349 workers on two shifts.

Facts: The worst side effect you’re likely to get from a shot is a sore arm. The risk of a severe allergic reaction is less than 1 in 4 million.

Chrysler Passes Honda

Chrysler sales increased to 100,077, enough to put it ahead of Honda for the industry’s No. 4 sales spot last month. Deliveries of its namesake brand rose 92 percent, helped by the Town & Country minivan and Sebring sedan. The Dodge brand increased 71 percent, Jeep climbed 65 percent, and Ram gained 22 percent.

“Chrysler is benefiting from stable gas prices and the highly visible launch of the redesigned Grand Cherokee,” said Ivan Drury, an analyst for Edmunds.com. “As long as consumers are not worried about high fuel costs Chrysler should be able to maintain a decent sales pace, since 71 percent of Chrysler sales are trucks.”

The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan final index of consumer sentiment fell to 68.2 last month from 68.9 in August. The drop was smaller than analysts estimated, evidence that the largest part of the economy may be stabilizing.

“We believe the economic recovery in the second half will be slower than the first half,” GM’s Johnson said. “We do expect modest employment growth. Consumers are starting to spend, albeit cautiously.”

Automakers decreased sales incentives and discounts by an average of 2 percent from last year, which may have kept sales from gaining more, according to TrueCar.

DETROIT — Chrysler Group, continuing its product overhaul, officially took the cover off the redesigned 2011 Dodge Charger sedan today.

The automaker said the latest Charger was “spiritually inspired by the second-generation Charger of the late 1960s.”

It is also one of the most aerodynamic Charger models ever, Chrysler said, with a lower hood line, faster windshield, more radically raked back headlights, tighter wheel openings, lower sill and a race-car-like flat under body.

Dodge said the car will go on sale this year.

The Charger’s new front end includes a sculpted aluminum hood, redesigned front fascia and cross-hair grille, and new headlamps. In the back, the Charger receives a new tail lamp design that stretches across the rear and uses 164 light-emitting diodes.

The base engine in the 2011 Charger is Chrysler’s new 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6., which will be on SE and Rally trim levels. The Charger R/T will have a 5.7-liter V-8. All-wheel drive will be offered again as well.

And for the first time, Chrysler said, several safety and security features will be available on the 2011 Charger. They include adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-path detection and a rear backup camera with grid lines.

A: My favorite restaurant was Pistons Public House until they went out of business,  I guess I was the only one to think so.  M favorite hangout spot is my secret place, sorry!

A: This is where you would expect me to say a Jeep, but it was a 1980 Ford Fiesta.  Wait, I did have a Power Wheels Jeep as a kid… Ah-Haaa!

A: I really like Groundhog Day.  I think because those Groundhogs are so funny when they freak out at their shadow.  Also, I liked the Bill Murray movie, “Groundhog Day”.
