We received information from GM about the first 2014 Chevy Silverado to arrive at our store, and we can’t wait to see this truck when it gets here.

The first 2014 Silverado to arrive at our Cedar Rapids location will be black with short box, crew cab body, and four-wheel drive. It will carry the LTZ package and feature some amazing technology like remote engine starting and E Z Lift and Lower Tailgate.

The engine in the 2014 Silverado headed for Cedar Rapids will be the 5.3L V8.

GM says the Silverado, along with it’s sibling the GMC Sierra, is going to be the most fuel-efficient V8 in its segment. Not only will the 2014 Silverado and Sierra equipped with the 5.3L V8 be extremely powerful and capable of handling almost any towing job, it will also have incredible fuel-economy.

The engine will feature Chevy’s advanced fuel-saving technology, including direct injection, variable valve timing, and active fuel management. The 5.3 will also be mated to Chevy’s smooth running 6-speed automatic transmission.

That’s why we’d like to recognize a special group of the best young technicians on our team! Nathaniel Scherbaum (Pat McGrath Chevyland), Steven Witt (McGrath Buick GMC Cadillac) and Justin Carnahan (McGrath Buick GMC Cadillac) were each recipients of a $2,000 scholarship this year from the Iowa Automotive Dealer Association. The IADA awarded 13 students in Iowa pursuing education that will lay the foundation for careers in the auto industry.

Steven and Justin are graduating from the Kirkwood Automotive program in a couple of weeks. Both worked at McGrath while attending school, and also completed their 6 week internship with us last summer. After graduation, both will be joining the company full time!

Leading the way for America’s auto brands is the ever-popular full-size pickup and the increasingly efficient SUV.

American Trucks Leading the Pack

The Numbers: The Detroit 3 (GM, Chrysler and Ford) all made double digit increases in April, thanks in large part to the truck segment. Sales for full-size pickups rose 27% in April, and since the start of 2013, truck sales are up 20%.

The Detroit 3 combined sold 94% of the trucks moved in April.  Sales of the Ram brand altogether climbed 49%.

Together, the companies sold a full-size truck every 18 seconds last month!

Why trucks, why now? Many experts link the rise in truck sales directly to the rise in the housing market.  As residential construction rises, full-size pickups rise in nearly a one-to-one ratio.

Also, with a steadily rising economy, more small businesses have the confidence to make larger purchases, which includes buying a pickup.

Sports Utility Comeback?

Alongside the trucks, SUVs have also made great strides in April. Driven by increased efficiency and a decline in gas prices, SUV sales rose 31%.

According to Kelly Blue Book analyst Alec Gutierrez, demand for larger SUVs never really disappeared, it simply lay dormant while technology and fuel-efficiency caught up.

Now that a versatile SUV is again a practical option for drivers, people seem to be jumping back into their SUVs.

2014 Cadillac CTS: You can’t talk about luxury vehicles without bringing up Cadillac. One of the most anticipated luxury sedans of the year is the 2014 CTS, which debuted in March at the New York Auto Show.

The sedan will have all the luxury and refinement expected from any Cadillac, but this one also gives drivers a new option: a twin-turbo V-6 mated to a smooth 8-speed transmission. How about 420 horsepower and 0-60 in 4.6 seconds, all with classic Cadillac style?

The 2014 Chevy Camaro features a powerful engine and sports-performance engineering, and while the Z28’s 500 7.0 V8 engine might not sound like a Chinese best-seller, Chevrolet is hopping to tap into the giant market with this redesigned muscle car.

2014 Jeep Cherokee

2014 Jeep Cherokee: With an international debut for a redesigned national icon, the Jeep Cherokee could see success in China’s growing SUV market. China is actually Jeep’s 2^nd biggest market, with a 107% rise in sales during 2012, according to CNBC. Like the Camaro, the 2014 Cherokee is expected to draw a unique set of Chinese buyers.

This is just a small sample of the vehicles that made international debuts at the Shanghai Motor Show.

While Ruess succeeded in keeping the details to himself, he said these new pickups (one for Chevy and one for GMC) will have better fuel economy and will be able to do 95% of the work done by a full-size pickup.

He also said the new trucks will not share engines with GM’s larger pickups, the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra.

A Small Chevy Truck Heading Back to the Lineup

The two trucks will each be aimed at different type of buyer. One pickup will be geared towards working individuals who need a fuel-efficient work truck, while another will appeal more to “lifestyle” buyers who need to haul recreation and outdoors equipment.

The Chevy Colorado, along with its near-identical twin, the GMC Canyon, was discontinued after the 2012 model year. With slumping sales during the economic downturn, GM decided to phase out the smaller trucks and focus on its bread and butter, the full size Silverado and Sierra.

Now that pickups are making a rebound alongside the U.S. economy, GM feels the time is right to re-invent the smaller truck segment.

GM is waging that a rejuvenated small Chevy and GMC truck will be able to draw away customers from Nissan and Toyota, who currently dominate the smaller truck segment.

Currently none of the Detroit Three (General Motors, Ford, Chrysler) offer anything smaller that a full-size pickup, so GM has a serious shot at succeeding with a lighter, more fuel-efficient truck.

Model names were not given for the new trucks, but Ruess was adamant that the trucks will be completely different compared to the Colorado and Canyon.

Pickup sales are up 12% this year, giving indication that Americans are renewing their commitment to hard-working, versatile pickups.

The smaller trucks are expected to be debuted during the Fall of 2013, possibly at the Los Angeles Auto Show, which runs in November.
