General Motors is planning to add full connectivity and make their cars internet hotspots by mid-2014. The cars will feature high-speed 4G broadband connections.
GM will team up with AT&T to give select 2015 models 4G LTE broadband, which is currently the fastest type of wireless connection available.
Vehicles from Chevy, GMC, Buick, and Cadillac will now offer smoother access to online services such as weather, traffic reports, news, and more. At this time it is not known which GM vehicles will feature the internet capability.
Most 2015 models will feature the AT&T backed service, but leaders at GM say they plan to offer the internet connectivity across their entire lineup as soon as possible.
Internet Connectivity from GM Vehicles
Users will be able to access the internet without a linked smart phone, which is now required in order to access online content. Not only will this free the car from the smartphone, it will also make for a faster, more streamlined internet experience. Reliability and consistency of the connection is also expected to rise.
Drivers of GM cars will also be able to upgrade their software in order to stay on top of changing technology. This will also allow for a more customized user experience.
Not only will the vehicle be connected to the web, it will also act as a hotspot for mobile devices such as iPads and laptops.
Vehicles with internet connectivity will be offered globally, and GM plans to create partnerships with other suppliers and wireless carriers in different regions.
Cars will still be offered with Chevy’s MyLink and Cadillac’s CUE, but the 4G LTE connection will bring new capabilities, such as streaming video for backseat passengers.
