Honda announced this week that it is recalling over 870,000 vehicles to address an issue related to roll-aways.
The recall mostly affects older cars and vans sold in the US, and includes Odyssey minivans and Pilot SUVs from the 2003 and ’04 model years, and the Acura MDX from 2003 through 2006.
Honda Recall Affects 870,000 Vehicles Worldwide
The problem is related to the key ignition mechanism that locks the key in place while the cars is in drive, reverse, or neutral.
When the gears wear out, the key can be released at any time, resulting in numerous drivers leaving the vehicle while it’s not in park. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, this has resulted in 43 complaints and 16 reported crashes resulting in two injuries.
The NHTSA has been investigating the Honda ignition mechanisms since October of this year.
The current issue brings the total number of recalled Honda products to almost 2.3 million since 2003. The NHSTA is currently investigating brake issues with the 2005 Honda Pilot; the 2003 Pilot was recalled due to low-beam headlight failure.
According to reports, owners will begin receiving notices around February, and the ignition system will be fixed free of charge.
