Hometown Hustle: Growing Up in Dubuque
In Episode 20 of The Showroom, we talk with Mark Updegraff, General Manager at Chevy of Dubuque. His story is one of resilience, growth, and community.
Mark grew up in Dubuque in a neighborhood filled with backyard games and lasting friendships. After graduating from Hempstead High School, he studied marketing at UNI. His first sales job? Door-to-door phone book advertising. It was tough, but it taught him how to push through rejection and connect with people.
Finding His Fit at McGrath
One day, while driving through Madison, Mark heard a McGrath radio ad. He pulled into a library, applied online, and landed an interview. From his very first day at the Coralville store—on a busy “Suit Saturday”—he was hooked.
Mark moved up quickly. From sales to finance to management, he soaked up knowledge from leaders like Craig and TJ. He discovered that helping people understand their credit and finances was more rewarding than just closing a deal.
Back in Dubuque—And Leading the Team
In 2023, he became General Manager of Chevy of Dubuque after briefly leaving McGrath and moving south. Each day looks different. One moment, he’s working with a vendor. The next, he’s helping an employee or mopping the showroom floor.
With over 50 full-time employees, Mark makes it a priority to know his team. He believes great leadership means understanding how to bring out the best in each person.
Facing Loss with Strength and Compassion
Not long after becoming GM, Mark faced tragedy. His brother-in-law Nick, a service advisor at the store, died by suicide. The loss hit hard—both personally and across the team.
Mark and his wife Julia channeled their grief into action. With the support of McGrath and the community, they raised funds for veteran suicide awareness in Nick’s honor. Their openness helps reduce the stigma and encourages others to speak up.
Adapting to Change in the Auto Industry
Mark also spoke about today’s auto landscape. From chip shortages to tariffs, the industry keeps shifting. He broke down how new tariffs might affect pricing—especially for models like the Chevy Trax.
Despite the uncertainty, Mark stays focused. “We can’t control tariffs,” he said. “But we can take care of people. That’s what we do.”
Driving Forward: Leadership, Legacy, and Looking Ahead
Mark’s story isn’t just about his career. It’s about character, connection, and commitment. From knocking on doors in Marion to leading Chevy of Dubuque, he’s built a path fueled by purpose.
He leads with heart—whether guiding his team, supporting his family, or navigating tough times. As a dad, mentor, and GM, Mark focuses on what matters most: the people.
At Chevy of Dubuque, the cars bring people in—but it’s the people who drive the culture forward.
