In this week’s episode of The Showroom, the host welcomes Andrew Miller—an Iowa native, U.S. Army veteran, marathon runner, and automotive leader. Together, they explore stories that bridge small-town roots, military grit, and unforgettable moments inside the dealership.
From Cornfields to Community
Andrew grew up in Gilmore City, Iowa—a town of just over 130 people. With no home mail delivery and the nearest Walmart 45 minutes away, life moved at a slower pace. “My graduating class had 12 people… I was top ten,” he quips. Despite the size, the town offered a close-knit lifestyle.
Each day started with pheasant hunting before school, followed by a gun drop-off at the church. He and his friends swam in quarries and biked between nearby towns for fun. These early experiences instilled a deep sense of independence and resourcefulness.
Answering the Call to Serve
In 2009, Andrew followed his family’s tradition and enlisted in the Army. Just a year later, he deployed to Afghanistan as a 13F mortar specialist. He spent his days calling in artillery rounds and air strikes, developing quick thinking and resilience.
“That deployment made me who I am today,” Andrew reflects. “If I can’t outsmart you at work, that’s my motto.” His time in service sharpened his problem-solving skills and built the discipline he now brings to the automotive world.
Running a Marathon in Combat Boots
One of Andrew’s boldest accomplishments came in Afghanistan. Without formal training, he qualified for the Boston Marathon—and ran it on loose gravel in 120°F heat. At mile 18, his legs gave out. A fellow soldier ran beside him, pushing him to the finish line. He crossed it in 5 hours and 2 minutes.
This incredible feat underscores his determination: whether on the battlefield or in business, he never quits.
Hitting the Gas in the Car Business
After returning home, Andrew dove into the car business. Initially, he commuted three and a half hours to sell new cars at another dealership, even sleeping in his Grand Prix between shifts. Eventually, he found his rhythm at the McGrath Chevyland Used Car Supercenter, where he built a successful career in sales and finance.
Over time, he rose through the ranks and helped open new stores. His military discipline and people skills translated seamlessly into leadership roles.
Andrew Miller’s life demonstrates how grit, loyalty, and a strong sense of humor can take someone from a 137-person town to a career of national impact. His journey is full of heart, challenges, and unexpected twists—and Episode 24 of The Showroom captures it all.
Tune in for a story that proves small beginnings can lead to extraordinary lives.
