The History of Distracted Driving and How to End It

December 14, 2015 By Alexandra Sydor

Texting while driving sign

Smart phones, smart watches, tablets – you name it! With technology gadgets on the rise, distracted driving poses more of a risk than ever before. Distracted driving has always been a topic of discussion from the mid-1950s and beyond. Luckily, the car industry has made technological advancements to combat distracted driving. We will cover the history of distracted driving and how to end it.

Distracted Driving Stats:

Did you know that drivers who text while driving are 23 times more likely to be in a car accident? Even though texting while driving is dangerous, 37% of drivers admit that they regularly text while driving.

History of Distracted Driving

Distracted driving all began in the mid-1950s when audio systems were added into the vehicles. In 1956, Chrysler introduced the Highway HiFi which was a mobile record player. Through time, music stations, cassettes, cd players, ipods were all on the rise making it easy to change stations and music. With customization, came distractions.

With every distraction, the car industry has made advancements to lower distracted driving. They’ve adjusted the infotainment system by adding in easily adjustable knobs and buttons. They also added audio controls to the steering wheel so you can adjust volume and change the station all without taking your hands off the wheel.

Minimizing Distractions

If you find yourself easily distracted behind the wheel, opt for a newer vehicle that has technology advancements to combat distracted driving. Look for a vehicle that has:

  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Voice Commands
  • Hands-free calling

Learn more about these technologies.

It would also be beneficial for you to also look into a vehicle with the following safety features:

  • Lane-keep assist
  • Lane departure warning
  • Forward collision alert
  • Rearview camera

Remember, while you’re on the road, driving is your main priority. Distracted driving not only harms you, but your passengers and other motorists on the road.
