Vehicle Safety Features

January 22, 2020 By Lindsey Elam

Safety Features

With technology in vehicles changing even more rapidly these days, it is important to not only know what they do, but also how they can keep you safe while on the road.

Forward Collision Warning

Forward collision warning provides a warning to the driver when it detects a potential collision. Depending on the type of vehicle, this technology will provide a visual, audible, or a tactile warning alert. According to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, forward collision warning has reduced the number of rear-end accidents by 27%.

Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keeping

Lane departure is a warning that alerts the driver when they may unintentionally drift out of the lane. This warning does not correct the vehicle itself, but provides an alert to the driver. Lane keeping is very similar in the sense that it helps prevent the driver from drifting out of their lane.

Backup Camera

The backup camera is one that you may be more familiar with as it has become very common among vehicles. This helps prevent the driver from rear ending an object, and most importantly pedestrians that may be walking or standing behind the vehicle.

Blind Spot Reduction

Blind spot reduction will provide an alert or warning to the driver if there are other vehicles in adjacent lanes or in an area where that driver may not see them. This is helpful when it comes to lane changes while driving.

Automatic Emergency Braking

Similar to that of the forward collision warning, the automatic emergency braking will detect the impending collision and supplement the driver’s braking to avoid crashing. If the driver is not aware of the impending collision, the emergency brake system can also apply the brakes to prevent the crash or to help lessen the impact of the crash.

Conclusion

In addition to those listed above there are several other safety features such as airbags, headlights, park assist, and driver-attention monitoring, etc. that can be beneficial. Thankfully newer vehicles are coming with several safety features as standard. Please remember that while these features are helpful in preventing accidents, nothing beats an alert and defensive driver.
