GM is working with the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) to build a Chevy Colorado — which is currently available in gasoline and Duramax turbodiesel engines — with a hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system.
Some of the benefits of hydrogen fuel cell propulsion is low torque production for off-roading, quiet operation and its electric power.
According to TARDEC Director Paul Rogers, quiet vehicles — like vehicles with fuel cell technology — are highly valued among scouts, special operators and other specialties. Also, since the bi-product of fuel cell propulsion technologies is water, it is valuable in severe 
environmental conditions.
Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology is valued because it does not use petroleum or create carbon dioxide emissions. Renewable resources — like wind and biomass — are used to create the hydrogen for the system, and its emission is water vapor.
GM and The U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center will will be testing the new Chevy Colorado under close supervision for the next twelve months to make sure that it can endure the extreme military conditions.
