Understanding Vehicle & Safety Recalls

June 19, 2015 By Tiffany Ventura

When purchasing a car, whether new or new to you, there are so many thoughts and concerns that we all endure during the process. One main thought is how safe and reliable is this car? How do find precise and factual information about the specific vehicle I am considering purchasing?

Google can only do so much. Here at McGrath Auto we have put together this reference for you to be able to have one-stop platform for research! The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), a branch of the US Department of Transportation, works diligently to provide you with an excellent resource to find all recalls and safety concerns with all possible vehicles to purchase that are as old as 15 years to manufactured today.

View their webpage here: View Safecar.gov Now!

Safercar.gov provides you relief-

-in that if you are buying a used vehicle, you can search the VIN number (17 digit number located on your sales paperwork, or the lower left corner of the windshield) to see if the previous owners did in fact take it to be repaired. Or if you are purchasing new, you can confirm if any recall has been issued and if it was tended to on that specific vehicle.

But what happens if a recall is issued after you purchase the car?

Take a breath, you are covered! The manufacturer issues the recall, you are then notified by First Class Mail with an offer to fix it for Free! If you want to know in the moment a recall hits, you can sign up for Email alerts, or download the mobile NHTSA App for Android Devices, and for iOS Devices(Apple).

National Automobile Dealers Association provided this document for you to understand the deeper, legal details of how safety recalls are to be issued and handled. When researching, we all like to know the facts and feel prepared for a purchase of this caliber, if you have ANY questions at all with recalls, or any other vehicle inquiries, please do not hesitate to contact us! We look forward to helping you though this process and make it as smooth and easy as possible.
