Ram is shaking up the pickup truck industry with the newly introduced 2021 Ram 1500 TRX. Already the TRX is snagging titles from most powerful half-ton pickup on the street, to MotorTrend’s Truck of the Year. The 2021 Ram TRX was quoted by MotorTrend as “the new benchmark that all supertrucks must beat.”
MotorTrend determines the winner yearly based on six key criteria:
- Advancement in Design
- Engineering Excellence
- Efficiency
- Safety
- Value
- Performance of Intended Function
Advancement in Design
Now you may be thinking, the TRX is a 1500, so are they built the same? No, the frame on the TRX is 74% different than the Ram 1500. The TRX has been built to handle off road terrains, has a thicker frame, modified axles and suspension and is 8-inches larger in width than the rest of the Ram 1500 line-up. Not only is the TRX 8-inches wider but it has a 11.8” ground clearance, 13” front suspension, and a 14” rear suspension.

Speaking of styling, the Ram 1500 TRX interior was praised while being judged for the Truck of the Year award. As quoted by Motortrend; “no other truck maker can match Ram in interior design, fit and finish, or quality”. The interior of the TRX is a blend of its fellow Ram trims, the Rebel and Limited, offering the best of both worlds, sporty and luxurious.
Engineering Excellence

The TRX is powered by a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 Hellcat engine, producing 702 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. With the Hellcat engine under hood, the “most powerful” truck title is awarded to the TRX for it’s class.
Efficiency
During a time of electric and hybrid pickups, the Ram TRX chooses a supercharged V8 engine to place under the hood. The estimated fuel economy is 10 mpg city and 14 mpg highway. The Ram TRX falls short in the fuel efficiency category but clearly that does not impact the truck from receiving the title “MotorTrend Truck of the Year”.
Performance of Intended Function

There is no denying that the performance in the Ram TRX is unbelievable. Just to rattle off a few statistics:
- 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds
- Best-in-class top speed of 118 MPH
- 702 horsepower
- 650 lb-ft of torque
Through clever engineering solutions and smart design, Ram has reset the standard as to what’s possible in a pickup.
MotorTrend
The Ram TRX was built for off-road and on-road capabilities. As mentioned earlier, the TRX has an 11.8 inch ground clearance with a 2.64:1 crawl ratio, as well as a 30.2-degree approach, a 21.9-degree breakover.
Safety

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration rated the Ram 1500 TRX with a 5-star overall safety rating. Equipped in the TRX are advanced safety features including; blind-spot monitors, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and more.
Value
The Ram 1500 TRX starts out at $71,690 but for the value the TRX has to offer, it makes sense why the ticket price starts out at that amount. The Ram TRX competitors come less equipped than the TRX, which was a factor MotorTrend considered when awarding the TRX “Truck of the Year”.
The 2021 Ram TRX is an exciting truck to hit the market for 2021 and deserved the award; 2021 MotorTrend “Truck of the Year.” Read the full article by MotorTrend for their full opinion on the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX.
