General Motors’ top trucks, the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra, are leading the light-duty segment in overall power, according to numbers released by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).
The organization certified the 6.2L V8 engine, which will be available in the 2014 Sierra 1500 and 2014 Silverado 1500 later this fall, at 420 horsepower and 460 ft-lb of torque, more than comparable models from Ford, Nissan, Toyota, and more.

As you can see from the numbers above, General Motors’ 6.2L V8 creates the most capable and powerful light-duty pickup.
In a press release from General Motors, Jeff Luke, chief engineer for GM, said that “power and towing are fundamental capabilities for full-size pickups”, adding that “the 2014 Silverado and Sierra deliver unmatched power and towing capability with a host of ingenious driver aids.”
The 6.2L V8 will be available in 1500 versions of the Silverado LTZ, Silverado High Country, Sierra SLT, and Sierra Denali.
When properly equipped, these trucks deliver a class-leading maximum trailering capacity of 12,000 lbs.
The Max Trailering Package, which is available in 2WD, 4WD, crew cab, and double cab models, includes the following features:
- 7-pin and 4-pin connector
- Enhanced cooling
- Automatic locking rear differential
- Heavy-duty rear axle
- Increased-capacity leaf springs
- Revised shock tuning
- Trailer brake control
GMC has also created an innovative Trailering App, a smart phone application that provides information on towing and helps customers decide which vehicle is right for their needs.
All three engines available in the 2014 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra (4.3L V6, 5.3L V8, 6.2L V8) are made of light-weight yet sturdy aluminum, and come with fuel-saving technology such as cylinder deactivation and variable valve timing.
2014 Sierra and Silverado: Powerful and Efficient
Not only do the Sierra and Silverado boast the most powerful light-duty trucks, they also have the most fuel-efficient V8 in the 5.3L engine. The 5.3 is has an EPA-estimated 23 mpg highway, better than the Ford EcoBoost V6.
The Sierra is the first truck to earn a 5-Star safety rating, giving GMC drivers a safe ride while commuting or towing.
