By 2018, Kia will invest $2 billion in autonomous technology development. Kia’s goal is to launch partially autonomous technology by 2020, and then release its first fully autonomous vehicle by 2030.
To begin the development of the autonomous vehicle, Kia has to create its new Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS).
The Advanced Driver Assistance System will be comprised of several sensors located around the perimeter of the vehicle. The sensors will help the car recognize and assess other vehicles, hazards (like poor road conditions) and driving situations in order to make decisions.
For 2020, Kia plans to develop Highway Driving Assist, which is a combination of lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control systems. The speed of the car will be determined by GPS data. Parking assist technologies — like Remote Advanced Parking Assist Systems (RAPAS) — will also be invented so the car could park at a push of a button.
Kia’s goal for 2030 is to release its first fully autonomous vehicle. For this vehicle to operate, Kia will have to further enhance the ADAS sensors, and work on vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications.
