Pat McGrath, owner of McGrath Family of Dealerships, was recognized as one of Iowa’s top business leaders, earning a spot on the prestigious Iowa 500 list. This distinction, curated by the Corridor Media Group, celebrates McGrath’s impact in the automotive industry, his community, and beyond.
Pat McGrath: The Man, The Myth, The Philanthropist
With a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls (class of 1980), McGrath’s passion for the automotive retail business began at an early age. This was inspired by his father, H.B., who founded the family’s first dealership in Wisconsin in 1952. McGrath has since grown the family legacy, evolving into a household name with three generations of McGrath’s manning the ship.
As a lifelong resident of Cedar Rapids, McGrath is deeply rooted in the community. He created a donor-driven fund at the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation, which has distributed over $700,000 to organizations supporting local causes. His philanthropic efforts extend to health initiatives as well. McGrath is a two-time melanoma survivor and a dedicated supporter of the University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center. “Sharing my journey has allowed me to provide a unique perspective to help further their mission,” he shared.
Beyond healthcare, McGrath has participated in other fundraising efforts. He’s partnered with organizations like the American Cancer Society, including Chevrolet’s #WeDriveFor initiative. Following the devastating derecho of 2020, McGrath and his dealerships stepped up to support recovery efforts. This included contributing to Matthew 25, a nonprofit focused on aiding low-income residents with home repairs.

What’s the Iowa 500 anyway?
The Iowa 500 list, developed through a year-long research process by the Corridor Business Journal, recognizes leaders who drive innovation, growth, and positive change in Iowa. McGrath’s inclusion celebrates decades of leadership and commitment to Iowa’s economic and social well-being.
A reception will be held for the awardees on March 12, 2025 in Des Moines.
