Since 1976, the General Motors Foundation has donated money to organizations that support education, community development, environment/safety and health and human services.
Over the past decade, the GM foundation has donated over $265 million dollars in grants to support these different nonprofits.
Community Development
The GM Foundation has donated almost $1.5 million to Habitat for Humanity. Also, each year GM employees work with well-known DIY bloggers to renovate two homes for families in need.
GM donated over $10 million to the MLK Foundation for the creation of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial, which was completed on October 16, 2011.
Health and Humanity
The GM Foundation has donated more than $1 million dollars in the past decade to the American Heart Association. The proceeds help fund research and prevention of heart disease, cancer and diabetes.
In 2013, The GM Foundation gave $450,000 to the American Red Cross to help with disaster relief effort, to provide shelter and feed those who were affected.
The GM Foundation partners with Safe Kids Worldwide to educate parents, caregivers and children about vehicle-related safety. Some of the topics covered include car seat safety and the prevention of accidental heat-related deaths as a result of leaving children unattended in vehicles. In 2013, GM donated $2 million to this organization.
To help the Detroit Economic Growth Association upgrade the Lasky and Williams Community Centers, the GM Foundation donated $2 million.
Focus: HOPE is a non-profit that is dedicated to finding realistic solutions to hunger, economic disparity, racial inequality and inadequate education in Detroit. GM donated $2.5 million to its education initiative Center for Advanced Technologies.
Environmental Sustainability and Conservation
At this year’s Chevrolet GREEN Educator Awards — which is sponsored by the GM Foundation and Earth fore — 20 nationwide educators (K-12, higher-education and community-based program instructors) were recognized for integrating environmental education into their classrooms.
Education
The GM Foundation is dedicated to encourage students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (also known as STEM), as well as in the automotive industry. The GM Foundation has donated over $70 million towards education since 2007 to make education more accessible and affordable.
GM supports early childhood, K-12 and collegiate programs by providing grants, student scholarships, and encouraging learning programs.
